As instead of having scenes of gore and the characters being interviewed by the police, placed at random parts during the film (which originally ruined the flow of the film and also made it more confusing at times) the gore scenes are removed and the interview is placed at the end of the film as one long scene.

Helping build the film's air of mystery much better then in the theatrical cut. This helped improve the mystery part of the film as the audience is now just as in the dark as the characters, allowing us to learn thing along with them as opposed to letting the audience know too soon. The most important change however was editing the film to take place in chronological order as opposed to non-linear. Which better brought the film's atmosphere to the forefront. This helped the film feel much more like a psychological horror as opposed to some weird gore filled almost slasher like "mystery" film. The next change was to remove all the studio requested gore. This was also driven further by removing other scenes that featured heavy metal music, removing the film's unneeded punk feel. The first being changing the opening song back to the song "Witchcraft" by Frank Sinatra as opposed to Marilyn Manson's "Disposable Teens." This change helps the film open in a more lighthearted tone better reflecting the state of mind of the characters at the start of the film and contrasting how that changes by the end of the film. The changes made in the director's cut/fanedit are the biggest reason the film is finally allowed to be viewed the way it was originally meant to be, as it massively improves the film in every way possible. as The Blair Witch Project can be downloaded into oblivion and compressed into.
